Stop FGM group has organized and hosted The commemoration of International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation in Mogadishu, Somalia on 9th February 2018.
The group invited Somali mothers, religious leaders and University students among others to attend the significant event in which an Islamic scholar declared FGM as a crime against women.
Leyla Ahmed, the Director of Stop FGM : ‘’ Today we are not only marking the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM but we are also committing ourselves to protect our girls through financial support from both Somali and International community partners ,’’ she said.
on his part Hussein Mohamed who is the programs manager at Stop FGM group explained the main reason behind the establishment of Stop FGM organization.
‘’ The main reason we established STOP FGM is to reduce new FGM cases and protect our girls in Somalia, We all know about 98% of our girls living Somalia have undergone Female Genital Cutting, Its very sad indeed, We as young Somalis will continue this campaign until all Gender Based Violence’s are eradicated,’’ He Said during the event.
Sheikh Ibrahim Khayre, an Islamic scholar, confirmed that FGM is not an Islamic culture and declaring that the practice should not exist in within Somali society any more .
‘’ Every form of Female Genital Mutilation that is performed on our girls is forbidden by our religion. ‘’ I would request every Somali family to understand the religious position on FGM,, he added.
